Learn about the history of chocolate from its ancient beginnings in Mesoamerica through the centuries to the modern day. The presentation will focus on how chocolate has changed through time, its cultural value and how mechanization has altered its production process over time. At this hands-on program, you will have the rare opportunity to grind cacao nibs into chocolate using a Mexican grinding mill, taste cacao nib tea, cacao shell tea, chocolate wine, and a variety of other historic chocolate treats.

Tour of the house that compares the customs and social graces of the Loockerman family, who lived in the Hammond-Harwood House in the early 19th century, with those of characters in Jane Austen novels. After this tour join our Executive Director for a book club discussion of Austen’s novels in honor of her two-hundred and forty-third birthday. Light refreshments served.

90-minutes program for children.

 

Families are invited to the mansion for a day of holiday stories and crafts. Children will enjoy story-time amidst the splendor of the ballroom decorated for the season. After the story children will be invited to our activity classroom where they will create holiday decorations and learn about a Dutch Christmas tradition
