SUMMARY:Leading Ladies of Liberty: Songs from the Lives and Legacies of America’s First Women
DESCRIPTION:Behind the political drama of the early American republic stood a circle of brilliant and influential women who shaped the nation’s cultural life through their intellect\, taste\, and artistic patronage. Leading Ladies of Liberty explores the musical lives of figures such as Martha Jefferson Randolph\, an accomplished keyboard player who helped shape the musical life of Monticello; Dolley Madison\, whose celebrated Washington gatherings reflected the cultural refinements expected of the new capital; and Elizabeth Monroe\, whose years in France exposed her to the fashionable artistic traditions she later helped introduce to American society. \nIn this America 250 anniversary year\, the program highlights the musical traditions of early American society and the important role music played in the salons and parlors where conversation\, culture\, and identity helped define the young republic. Through songs and instrumental works of the period\, the concert offers a glimpse into the musical world of America’s founding generation. \nThe performance features soprano Elissa Edwards\, Artist-in-Residence at the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, joined by Wade Davis\, cello\, a featured soloist and chamber musician with many of the region’s leading early music ensembles\, and John Stowe\, organ\, former Professor of Organ and Harpsichord at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. \nThe concert will be preceded by a reception with wine and light refreshments at 6:00 pm. \nConcert supported by Nancy L. Harrison \n  \nARTIST SPOTLIGHTS:  \nWade Davis \nCellist Wade Davis is a distinguished soloist and chamber musician specializing in both modern and historical performance. A featured artist with leading ensembles including the Washington Bach Consort\, Folger Consort\, Smithsonian Chamber Music Society\, and Cathedral Choral Society\, he is admired for his virtuosic command\, expressive depth\, and stylistic versatility. Equally compelling as a soloist and collaborator\, his performances are noted for their warmth of tone and interpretive sophistication. Davis holds advanced degrees in Historical Performance from the Peabody Conservatory and is co-founder of the baroque ensemble S’amusant\, reflecting his deep commitment to bringing early repertoire vividly to life for modern audiences \n \n  \nJohn Stowe \nOrganist and harpsichordist Dr. John Chappell Stowe\, Emeritus Professor of Organ and Harpsichord at the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, has enjoyed a distinguished career as a performer\, teacher\, and specialist in early keyboard traditions. A dedicated advocate for historically informed performance\, Dr. Stowe taught continuo playing\, improvisation\, and early repertoire\, and was a longtime faculty artist with the Madison Early Music Festival. Active throughout the United States as a recitalist and lecturer\, his interests span early Italian keyboard music and later organ traditions. Known for performances that combine stylistic insight with expressive clarity\, Dr. Stowe brings both scholarly depth and artistic sensitivity to music of earlier eras. \n

SUMMARY:EVENT CANCELLED- Music from Maryland Traditions and Annapolis' Tuesday Club
DESCRIPTION:EVENT CANCELLED \nLocal celebrities in Irish music–Peter Brice on button accordion\, Tess Hartis on fiddle\, and guest pianist Donna Long– are featured in a concert of 18th and 19th century music from Maryland and Ireland. The concert will highlight minuets from the manuscripts of Annapolis dancing master John Ormsby who taught dancing here in the 1750s. Also featured is music from Annapolis’ Tuesday Club\, a colonial gentleman’s club. Though dance had always been a popular form of entertainment in America and Europe\, dance masters like Ormsby heightened the trend through private and public instruction.  This evening’s program is inspired by the research of former United States Naval Academy musician John Barry Tally who wrote Secular Music in Colonial Annapolis: The Tuesday Club 1745-56. \nPeter and Tess perform regularly as “The Livebox\,” and focus on the revival of traditional music from Maryland\, restoring its links to ancient traditions in Ireland and Scotland\, while identifying and demonstrating the mutations in popular American music movements. \n  \n  \nArtist Spotlight: \n \n  \nPeter Brice \nPeter Brice sings old songs in a traditional style and plays Irish traditional music on the button accordion. A native Annapolitan and a member of Baltimore’s Irish traditional music community\, Peter’s work blends musicology and history\, humor\, colorful design\, and a vision for traditional culture as the foundation for an intellectual life. He has collected and collated the compositions of Lisa Null and Billy McComiskey and is a collector of Irish and American traditional music. \nTess Hartis \nTess Hartis\, a South Carolina native\, plays fiddle and is a classically trained violinist. She has degrees in Violin Performance and Music Education from the University of South Carolina.  While at university\, Tess fell in love with Irish traditional music. Bringing together her classical background\, deep self-taught understanding of traditional styles\, and experience as an educator\, Tess offers a thoughtful and well-rounded approach to teaching beginning fiddle students. \nDonna Long \nDonna Long was born in Los Angeles and began her piano studies at the age of five with her father\, Byron Long\, a jazz/classical pianist. As a child\, Donna was exposed to many different genres of music\, including players from the old and new Jazz eras\, Classical\, Scottish\, Indian\, and African. Donna moved to the Baltimore/Washington\, DC area in 1978\, and after hearing Brendan Mulvihill play Irish music\, she was inspired to pick up the fiddle. Mulvihill provided her a solid foundation in style and playing. She then began to accompany him on the piano; today Donna is considered one of the finest Irish music pianists. She has recorded two duet albums with Mulvihill\, The Steeplechase and The Morning Dew. Her solo CD\, Handprints\, was released in June 2003

This unique performance centers on the poetry of Katherine Philips\, known as “the Matchless Orinda\,” alongside music by Henry Purcell\, Henry Lawes\, and Mary Dering. Performed with voice and lute\, and interwoven with spoken recitations\, With Quill and Voice illuminates the world of this early modern poet and her creative communities—where poetry and music blossomed by candlelight. \nThe evening features soprano Elissa Edwards\, hailed for her “pliant\, seductive\, free-ranging voice” (Gramophone)\, and Dr. Richard Kolb\, an internationally esteemed lutenist and theorbo player known for his performances and editions of 17th-century repertoire. \nThe concert will start at 7:00 pm and will end at 8:00 pm. A pre-concert reception with light refreshments will start at 6:00 pm and is complementary with your ticket. \nWe invite all concert participants to join us at 5:00 pm for our pre-concert lecture\, “The Unison of Tell-Tuned Hearts”: Katherine Philips and Her Musical Circle. Harrison\n\n  \nArtist Spotlight: \nDr. Richard Kolb \n\nDr. Richard Kolb is a scholar and performer active in the study and performance of seventeenth-century Italian music. SUMMARY:Full Moon Tour
DESCRIPTION:Fear of crime was a concern in early America as it is today. Limited light sources heightened residents’ worries –sometimes fostered by superstitious beliefs –of thieves\, wayward travelers\, and pranksters. Families shut themselves inside\, barred the front door\, and retreated to family life. Outside\, the more disorderly element frequented taverns\, carried on in the streets\, or engaged in raucous behavior. \nOn this tour\, visitors will learn what the lock-down rituals would be for the Loockerman family in the early 19th century\, as they try to keep their family secure.

SUMMARY:Discovering American Art: Silver in the Golden Age of Annapolis
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis year the annual Discovering American Art lecture series focuses on silver and the artisans who produced elegant but useful pieces in early Annapolis. \nAnnapolis was a thriving colony in the mid-18th century. Though the American colonists grew to resent the British\, they desired the amenities of the British lifestyle. The designs of decorative pieces\, furniture\, ceramics\, and silver that flourished during the “Golden Age” of Annapolis (1760s-1770s)\, were modelled on examples of earlier periods. Annapolis could claim 28 silversmiths who were accounted for in the years between 1720 and 1850\, but the evidence of their work is rare. The work of only 14 silversmiths survives today. \nTwo scholars of early Maryland life and artistry will speak; their lectures expand our understanding and appreciation for the exhibition Silver in the Golden Age of Annapolis currently on view at Hammond-Harwood House. The exhibition highlights over 80 silver objects\, as well as portraits\, manuscripts\, shop drawings\, and manuscripts of 14 silversmiths: James\, Sr. and John Chalmers\, William and Charles Faris\, Cesar Ghiselin\, Jeremiah Hughes\, John Inch\, Peter Kirkwood\, William McParlin\, Samuel Soumaien\, Thomas Sparrow\, Charles Tinges\, Philip Syng\, and William Whetcroft. This is the first time Annapolis silversmith have been exhibited in Annapolis. Lending institutions include the Baltimore Museum of Art\, Carlyle House\, Historic Annapolis\, Inc.\, Maryland State Archives\, Maryland Center for History and Culture\, Winterthur Museum\, Garden and Library and many private collectors. \nAn exhibition catalogue is available for purchase. \nSPEAKERS \nMark Beatson Letzer -Exhibition Guest Curator\nSilversmiths of Annapolis’ Golden Age \nIn this lecture\, Mark Letzer will showcase the surviving silver from the workshops of Annapolis silversmiths in the18th century. In addition to describing the artistry of the few surviving objects\, he will illuminate the lives of these craftsmen not only as silversmiths but as members of a larger community. Letzer will share the background and histories of these fascinating men. Letzer\, who as published and lectured widely\, is the former President and CEO of the Maryland Center for History and Culture\, formerly the Maryland Historical Society. He co-edited The Diary of William Faris: The Daily Life of an Annapolis Silversmith in 2003 with Jean B. Russo. \nHe authored the chapter “From Slave to “Self-Taught Genius” in the catalog Joshua Johnson: Portraitist of Early American Baltimore published by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown\, and a chapter on silver in The Material World of Eyre Hall for the Maryland Center for History and Culture in association with D. Giles Limited. In 2006 he curated the exhibition A Gardener’s Tale: The Eighteenth -century World of Annapolis Silversmith William Faris at the Maryland Historical Society. Letzer is also Executive Producer of the documentary Liberty of Conscience: The Founding of Maryland released in 2025. \nMarcia Miller\nCrafting the Golden Age: The Architectural World of Annapolis Artisans \nFocusing on the rise of Annapolis in the years just prior to the Revolution\, often called the Golden Age. Marcia Miller’s lecture will outline with the city’s changing urban landscape. This was a time of vast economic growth and opportunity encompassing all levels of society. The influx of artisans such as silversmiths and the dramatic rise of new construction created distinct areas of commercial\, speculative\, and private building. \nMarcia Miller is chief of the field research office of the Maryland Historical Trust\, where she oversees the documentation of Maryland’s historic and cultural resources. She has undertaken numerous field surveys and architectural investigations\, serving as the state’s lead architectural historian for the investigation and restoration of landmark buildings like the 18th -century Maryland State House. Marcia is co-editor of Architecture in Annapolis. Much of her research has focused on the complex interplay of designers\, craftsmen\, and clients in early Maryland\,\nespecially in Annapolis\, and how their dwellings fit into a larger trans-Atlantic narrative. \n1:30 p.m.        Marcia Miller – Crafting the Golden Age: The Architectural World of Annapolis Artisans\n2:45 p.m.        Mark Letzer – Silversmiths of Annapolis’ Golden Age\n4 – 5:30 p.m.  Reception and Exhibition Gallery Open

SUMMARY:Jane Austen Tour and Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Read- Tour- Discuss \nAmong the many reasons to enjoy reading Jane Austen is way she conveys a sense of place in the novels. Darcy surprising a visiting Elizabeth Bennet at his home in the large hall\, cool in the afternoon of an English summer\, surrounded by elegant chairs seldom sat in and ancestral portraits high on the walls. The Dashwood family\, newly moved to a smallish cottage after the death of their father and the takeover of their home by half-brother John\, meeting their benefactors for the first time in the handsome but cozy parlor of Barton Park. Emma Woodhouse caring for her fussy father by the fire in their estate’s drawing room. Austen sets scenes of intimacy and of social conversation in rooms\, carriages\, gardens\, shops\, even on the street. \nWhen I imagine life in Hammond-Harwood House in\, say\, 1813\, I see the rooms come into being. Francis Loockerman is in the small parlor off the dining room. Her sister sits with her\, drinking tea served by a young slave named Juliet\, and her children scamper in and out\, demanding her attention. Richard Loockerman is in his study conversing with a local politician about the price of tobacco and possible protections on trade. As in a Jane Austen novel\, the place and the people and the interactions all come together to form a meaningful story. Transferred from England to America during the same time period\, the daily troubles and triumphs are not unlike when viewed through the lens of place. \nA tour of Hammond-Harwood House featuring the similarities between Austen’s England and the Loockermans’ America is offered monthly. For November\, we’ll add on a book group session led by Mike Parker\, Professor of English Emeritus\, U.S. Naval Academy. Read “Emma\,” join the tour\, then discuss the nuances of this profound\, funny\, and captivating book. Let the place\, Hammond-Harwood House\, take you into these worlds\, different and yet the same. It often takes me there when I’ve spent time with one of Austen’s books. \nTour 2-3 p.m.\nBook Club 3-4 p.m. \n

SUMMARY:Below Deck: Ghost Tales & Sea Shanties
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a candlelit program that conjures the shadowy musical world of haunted harbors\, shipwrecks\, and sailor’s lore. Below Deck draws from the rich tradition of maritime music sung aboard tall ships and in dockside taverns during the long 18th century.\n\nSea shanties—rhythmic\, call-and-response work songs—were used to coordinate physical labor aboard sailing vessels\, helping sailors haul lines\, raise anchors\, and pass the time on long and often perilous voyages. These songs were rooted in survival and solidarity at sea\, forming a powerful oral tradition among seafarers.\n\nThrough dramatic narration and stirring historic songs\, this program traces the music of seafaring sailors. With songs that swing between sorrow and celebration\, Below Deck captures the soundscape of the sea—its dangers\, desires\, and enduring legends.\n\nThe Empressa Ensemble brings early and rarely heard music to life at the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, where they serve as Ensemble-in-Residence. Their immersive performances connect music with the architecture\, culture\, and stories of this remarkable 18th-century house.\n\nThe program features soprano Elissa Edwards\, praised by Gramophone for her “pliant\, seductive\, free-ranging voice\,” alongside guest artists.\n\n\n\n\n\nConcert supported by Nancy L. Harrison
