Masks must be worn to check in\, then participants will be given the option of borrowing face shields to allow for better breathing. \n\nIn the era of our new normal we invite you to return to the Hammond-Harwood House museum for our special series that intersects the beauty of art through wellness based activities. \nIn the first program Material Culture Mindfulness there will be a guided curator lecture by Rachel Lovett in the period rooms of the mansions to discuss the making of objects including ceramics\, textiles\, and furniture. It will be followed by a guided mindfulness breathing exercise in the historic second story ballroom to examine shapes\, colors\, and textures in the artifacts and become in tune with your surroundings. The mindfulness exercise will be led by instructor Monica Jordan. Monica is originally from Buenos Aires\, Argentina. She holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and a Master’s Certificate in Mind\, Brain and Teaching (MCMBT)\, graduating summa cum laude\, from Johns Hopkins University. Monica has been practicing mindfulness for over two decades and she has been teaching it for 15 years. She is committed to bringing mindfulness into everybody’s unique life experience. She feels regardless of the circumstances that we are surrounded by\, we can always tap into our inner power\, and develop emotional self-regulation and equanimity to see every situation as an opportunity for growth. DESCRIPTION:The Art of the Game: Cards\, Horse Racing\, and Tavern Life in the Early Chesapeake\nThe fourth annual Collectors’ Day will be a virtual lecture series with an optional onsite reception. Lectures (via Zoom\, to be accessed at attendees’ homes) will feature the taverns\, game rooms\, race tracks\, and forested hunting grounds of America’s sporting past. Beginning in the 18th century\, the Chesapeake region developed a sporting culture similar to England’s—with card games and horse racing as the central activities. Fortunes were gained and lost during card games. While the more cultivated played whist or loo for fun and challenge\, gambling was also a widespread pastime; games like brag\, a precursor to poker\, were played in the taverns. Each Annapolis tavern served a different clientele. Those in the middle and lower classes patronized rowdy sporting taverns like the one owned by James West—where violence was commonplace. A 1780 card game at West’s tavern led Thomas Pryse to call William Vereker a “damned rascal\,” and fisticuffs ensued. More elegant taverns like George Namm’s attracted elite clientele and even hosted George Washington. Annapolitans also played card games in the comfort of their homes. Following dinner parties\, both men and women might adjourn to the family game room for rounds of play; inventories of Annapolis homeowners often listed a game table. The Maryland Jockey Club\, the America’s oldest sporting association\, founded in Annapolis in 1743\, is credited with introducing thoroughbred racing in the colonies. The club attracted patrons like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington\, and the races held on the track in Annapolis drew crowds from around the colonies. Many of the horses and their trainers came from England. SUMMARY:Message In A Bottle
DESCRIPTION:Edgar Allan Poe’s short story Manuscript Found in a Bottle about an ill-fated sailor helped establish the author’s early career\, especially in Baltimore\, where the piece was published in 1833. The history placing a message in a bottle dates as far back as the 4th century B.C. By the 19th century the practice was well established\, and authors like Poe and Charles Dickens helped solidify the allure around this poetic pastime. \nHammond-Harwood House can claim a connection to Poe through Ninian and Amelia Pinkey\, who lived in this house from 1806 to1811. Their nephew\, Edward Coote Pinkney (1802-1828)\, was an accomplished poet praised by Edgar Allan Poe\, who seldom offered kind words to contemporaries. \nMessages in a bottle can serve different purposes–a plea for help\, a love note\, or a reminder of a certain time or event\, suitable for including in a time capsule. Over the last 247 years Hammond-Harwood House has been witness to a revolution\, civil war\, and pandemics. In 2020 the museum community came together virtually as we lived through a very challenging year. \nAs we start out the New Year\, we invite you to write a virtual message in a bottle using our Contact Us page. The messages will be printed and stored in our archives for future generations to read and get a snapshot of what the museum community was doing during 2020. Participants will receive a special New Year’s Eve e-mail from the museum at the end of 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Join historian Willa Banks for a thought-provoking afternoon talk\, Revealing the Enslaved Presence at Hammond-Harwood House in the 1800s. Newly discovered evidence has shown that three to five enslaved persons resided at Hammond-Harwood House for a period of time. A discussion of these findings combined with the known experiences of domestic servants in America provides not only an identity to each enslaved individual\, but also it offers a glimpse into the demands on their daily lives while serving the owners of this colonial style home. \nAbout the Presenter: Willa Banks has centered her studies on18th and19th century American history\, with a particular focus on the state of Maryland. Prior to her employment as a consultant and speaker\, she worked in the Education Department of local museums.
