DESCRIPTION:John Inch (1720–1763) Punch Bowl\, 1743Silver\, Baltimore Museum of Art\, Gift of Sarah Steuart Hartshorne and Alice Key Montell\nAnnapolis was a thriving colony in the mid-18th century. Though the American colonists grew to resent the British\, they desired the amenities of the British lifestyle. The designs of decorative pieces that flourished during the “Golden Age” of Annapolis (1760s-1770s) were inspired by classical forms of the Greeks and Romans. Among these desirable objects was silver\, a hallmark of wealth. Like the silversmiths in Europe\, Annapolis silversmiths crafted objects such as creampots\, canns\, skewers\, spoons and ladles\, in classical and rococo designs. Annapolis could claim 28 silversmiths in the years between 1720 and 1850\, but the evidence of their work is rare. Only 14 of these are known to have surviving work today. Join Hammond-Harwood House Curator Lucinda Dukes Edinberg to learn about the works and lives of these silversmiths through over 80 objects on loan from the Baltimore Museum of Art\, Winterthur Museum\, Gardens and Library\, Maryland Center for History and Culture\, Carlyle House\, Historic Annapolis and private collectors. Docent Bob Mulcrone will begin the tour with an in-depth history of timekeeping from sundials to Chinese water clocks. The invention of the pendulum in the 17th century modernized horological devices and a rising artisan class created clocks for elite and middle-class markets as consumer demand expanded. The tour will examine each item\, admiring the individual creation of the piece\, its decorative design\, and the social history connected to it. You will come away from this experience with a better appreciation for what time meant to our ancestors as well as how we tell time today.

Behind the Keyboard: Jane Austen’s Musical World is an immersive concert experience featuring selections from the Austen Family Music Collection\, performed on a newly restored Broadwood fortepiano—an instrument identical to the one Austen herself played in her home at Chawton\, making its public debut after decades of silence. \nIn celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday\, Hammond-Harwood House is hosting a concert that will feature a rare 1806 fortepiano built by John Broadwood and Sons\, the maker to His Majesty King George III and his 6 princesses. The 5 1/2 octave wing-shaped instrument has not been played since the 1990s and has been restored through the generosity of Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area and the Maryland Historical Trust.\nPresented by Empressa Ensemble and hosted in the 18th-century ballroom of the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, one of America’s finest examples of Georgian architecture\, this concert offers a rare and resonant encounter with Austen’s era. The program includes expressive English ballads\, spirited dances\, and elegant operatic transcriptions—music Austen herself copied and cherished—capturing the spirit of Regency parlor music\, where artistry\, wit\, and emotion converged at the keyboard. \nThe performance features soprano Elissa Edwards\, praised by Gramophone for her “pliant\, seductive\, free-ranging voice\,” and Thomas Sheehan\, Cathedral Organist at Washington National Cathedral and a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. SUMMARY:Cooking Maryland's Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine
DESCRIPTION:Event: Annapolis Book Festival \nIn 1963\, the Hammond-Harwood House Association published Maryland’s Way\, The Hammond-Harwood House Cook Book\, which includes over 700 recipes sourced from centuries old manuscript recipe books and contributions from Marylanders from across the state. Since its inception over 60 years ago\, it has sold over 100\,000 copies and is still in demand today. \nIn the new companion book\, Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine\, food historian Joyce M. White\, supported by several contributing authors\, reflects on the chief cultural influences of Maryland’s early foundational cuisine: Native American\, African American\, German\, and British. \nExtensive research on both the foods and their method of preparation brings the history of Maryland’s diverse cuisine into sharp focus. Voices of key individuals who shaped Maryland’s early culinary history are also resurrected. They include those of indigenous Marylanders; African Americans such as Sybby Grant\, Caroline Hammond\, Agnes Moody\, Lucy Smith\, and Joseph Peterson; and German immigrants such as Shinah Solomon Etting. In sharing their stories and those of others\, this new volume pays tribute to the legacy of early Maryland’s skilled culinary artisans.

SUMMARY:Painting the Hammond-Harwood House Spring Garden in Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Jean Brinton Jaecks will inspire students to paint the spring garden at the beautiful Hammond Harwood House. The garden surrounds the famous home\, with large boxwoods from the early 18 century\, urns filled with an abundance of flowers\, a dogwood tree and the enclosed brick wall with stunning views of the Naval Academy Chapel. Jean will give a Plein air watercolor demonstration and guidance throughout the afternoon in expressing light and atmosphere in watercolor. A critique will complete the day. \n  \nJean Brinton Jaecks is a visual artist working in watercolor\, oil\, and egg tempera on vellum with gold and silver leaf. After Jean’s BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, she was honored with MICA’s Alfred and Trafford Klots International Artist Residency in Brittany. Her MFA thesis at George Washington University\, “A Garden Near and Far\,” celebrated her garden. Jean taught twenty years at the U.S. Botanic Garden in partnership with the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington\, D.C.; at St. John’s College in Annapolis; at the National Arboretum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. \n  \nRain date Sunday April 27

Hours 12 – 5 pm\, Closed on Tuesdays \nOnline Lecture: Thursday\, April 10 at 7:00 pm \nBy Kedra Kearis\, PhD\, Associate Curator of art and visual culture at Winterthur Museum and a faculty member in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware. \n    Explore the multi-generational Peale family whose art production spanned more than a century\, from the colonial period through the Victorian era. Charles Willson Peale changed the course of American art through his artistic practice\, his museum business\, and the mentorship of his brother James\, as well as his sons and daughters in the arts. \n     Discover the remarkable lives of the Peale women–Sarah Miriam\, Margaretta Angelica\, Anna Claypoole\, Mary Jane Peale and others. Working within the Peale art legacy\, these women drew upon artistic traditions of the past and contemporary trends across the Atlantic\, through their individual art forms of portraiture\, still life\, and landscape painting. \nBio: Kedra Kearis\, is the associate curator of art and visual culture at Winterthur Museum and is a faculty member in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware. Kedra holds a PhD in Art History\, an MA in Literature\, and a BA in French Language and Literature. Her work examines the intersections of performance\, identity\, and modernization in the material culture of the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. She has curated “The Peale Painters: Global Perspectives in the Winterthur Collection” now on view at Winterthur Museum.
