SUMMARY:People in Portraits
DESCRIPTION:The portraits in the Hammond Harwood House recall the lives of men and women who lived\, worked\, and raised families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Because their images are preserved through painting\, their stories are more meaningful for us today.  When we see their faces\, we want to know more about the “People in the Portraits”. \n\

SUMMARY:Behind the Keyboard: Jane Austen’s Musical World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of candlelight\, history\, and music as we step inside the elegant world of Jane Austen. Behind the Keyboard: Jane Austen’s Musical World is an immersive concert experience featuring selections from the Austen Family Music Collection\, performed on a newly restored Broadwood fortepiano—an instrument identical to the one Austen herself played in her home at Chawton\, making its public debut after decades of silence. \nIn celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday\, Hammond-Harwood House is hosting a concert that will feature a rare 1806 fortepiano built by John Broadwood and Sons\, the maker to His Majesty King George III and his 6 princesses. The 5 1/2 octave wing-shaped instrument has not been played since the 1990s and has been restored through the generosity of Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area and the Maryland Historical Trust.\nPresented by Empressa Ensemble and hosted in the 18th-century ballroom of the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, one of America’s finest examples of Georgian architecture\, this concert offers a rare and resonant encounter with Austen’s era. The program includes expressive English ballads\, spirited dances\, and elegant operatic transcriptions—music Austen herself copied and cherished—capturing the spirit of Regency parlor music\, where artistry\, wit\, and emotion converged at the keyboard. \nThe performance features soprano Elissa Edwards\, praised by Gramophone for her “pliant\, seductive\, free-ranging voice\,” and Thomas Sheehan\, Cathedral Organist at Washington National Cathedral and a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. Together\, they bring this historic repertoire vividly to life in a setting as intimate and authentic as the music itself. \nWhether you’re an Austen enthusiast\, a lover of classical music\, or a fan of historic homes\, this unique evening promises to be a richly transportive experience. \nA complimentary wine reception begins at 6:00 p.m. in the garden\, with seating in the ballroom opening at 6:50 p.m. The performance begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. \nSaturday\, May 10\, 2025\nWine Reception at 6:00 p.m. | Concert at 7:00 p.m. \n\nConcert supported by Nancy L. Harrison

SUMMARY:Lafayette in Annapolis- 200 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:When Lafayette arrived in Annapolis in 1781\, The Atlantic Monthly quoted Mrs. Margaret Ogle\, “The divine Marquis de la Fayette is in town\, and is quite the thing.” Lafayette made several trips to Annapolis\, but his last visit in 1824 was part of an extensive tour from New Hampshire to Louisiana. As would be expected\, Lafayette’s visit was filled with military reviews\, balls\, and other festivities. \nOn December 17\, 1824\, Lafayette entered the State House to much pomp and circumstance. A semi-circle of girls dressed in white and holding banners that said “Lafayette- The friend of our fathers\, will always be welcome to the hearts of their children” greeted him to the rotunda and escorted him into the Old Senate Chamber. \nThe Hammond-Harwood House is proud to have in its collection a ribbon likely worn by Judge Jeremiah Townley Chase\, who was on the Annapolis welcoming committee for Lafayette’s visit. Judge Chase was owner of Hammond-Harwood House\, which he purchased for his daughter\, Frances Loockerman\, and her family. \nThe ribbon and a commemorative Lafayette bowl of the period will be on view in the Hammond-Harwood House Introductory Gallery\, which is free and open to the public December 13-15 as Annapolis celebrates the 200th anniversary of his visit. \nOn December 14 at 3 p.m.\, Hammond-Harwood House will offer a special Lafayette tour focused on the Annapolis of 200 years ago and featuring additional objects related to Lafayette’s visit – a miniature portrait of Lafayette\, a French Dubuc ormolu clock commissioned by the Marquis in honor of Washington\, and portraits of prominent Annapolitans of 1824.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Tour
DESCRIPTION:Fear of crime was a concern in early America as it is today. Limited light sources heightened residents’ worries –sometimes fostered by superstitious beliefs –of thieves\, wayward travelers\, and pranksters. Families shut themselves inside\, barred the front door\, and retreated to family life. Outside\, the more disorderly element frequented taverns\, carried on in the streets\, or engaged in raucous behavior. \nOn this tour\, visitors will learn what the lock-down rituals would be for the Loockerman family in the early 19th century\, as they try to keep their family secure.

Since its inception over 60 years ago\, it has sold over 100\,000 copies and is still in demand today. \nIn the new companion book\, Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine\, food historian Joyce M. White\, supported by several contributing authors\, reflects on the chief cultural influences of Maryland’s early foundational cuisine: Native American\, African American\, German\, and British. \nExtensive research on both the foods and their method of preparation brings the history of Maryland’s diverse cuisine into sharp focus. Voices of key individuals who shaped Maryland’s early culinary history are also resurrected. They include those of indigenous Marylanders; African Americans such as Sybby Grant\, Caroline Hammond\, Agnes Moody\, Lucy Smith\, and Joseph Peterson; and German immigrants such as Shinah Solomon Etting. In sharing their stories and those of others\, this new volume pays tribute to the legacy of early Maryland’s skilled culinary artisans.
