SUMMARY:Lafayette in Annapolis- 200 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:When Lafayette arrived in Annapolis in 1781\, The Atlantic Monthly quoted Mrs. Margaret Ogle\, “The divine Marquis de la Fayette is in town\, and is quite the thing.” Lafayette made several trips to Annapolis\, but his last visit in 1824 was part of an extensive tour from New Hampshire to Louisiana. As would be expected\, Lafayette’s visit was filled with military reviews\, balls\, and other festivities. \nOn December 17\, 1824\, Lafayette entered the State House to much pomp and circumstance. A semi-circle of girls dressed in white and holding banners that said “Lafayette- The friend of our fathers\, will always be welcome to the hearts of their children” greeted him to the rotunda and escorted him into the Old Senate Chamber. \nThe Hammond-Harwood House is proud to have in its collection a ribbon likely worn by Judge Jeremiah Townley Chase\, who was on the Annapolis welcoming committee for Lafayette’s visit. Judge Chase was owner of Hammond-Harwood House\, which he purchased for his daughter\, Frances Loockerman\, and her family. \nThe ribbon and a commemorative Lafayette bowl of the period will be on view in the Hammond-Harwood House Introductory Gallery\, which is free and open to the public December 13-15 as Annapolis celebrates the 200th anniversary of his visit. \nOn December 14 at 3 p.m.\, Hammond-Harwood House will offer a special Lafayette tour focused on the Annapolis of 200 years ago and featuring additional objects related to Lafayette’s visit – a miniature portrait of Lafayette\, a French Dubuc ormolu clock commissioned by the Marquis in honor of Washington\, and portraits of prominent Annapolitans of 1824.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Tour
DESCRIPTION:Fear of crime was a concern in early America as it is today. Limited light sources heightened residents’ worries –sometimes fostered by superstitious beliefs –of thieves\, wayward travelers\, and pranksters. Families shut themselves inside\, barred the front door\, and retreated to family life. Outside\, the more disorderly element frequented taverns\, carried on in the streets\, or engaged in raucous behavior. \nOn this tour\, visitors will learn what the lock-down rituals would be for the Loockerman family in the early 19th century\, as they try to keep their family secure.

SUMMARY:Tea Party with the Peggy Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Annapolis had its own version of the Boston tea party? \nThe Hammond-Harwood House has the only object which survived the Annapolis tea party–a punch bowl–which the ship’s Captain Jackson was able to deliver to its intended owner\, Lloyd Dulany. \nGrowing tension with English taxation through the Tea Act of 1773 led to a boycott of imported tea in the colonies. The brigantine Peggy Stewart\, owned by the British Loyalist Anthony Stewart was carrying a shipment of tea\, along with 53 indentured servants\, which was in violation of the non-importation resolution. An Annapolis committee\, that included Matthias Hammond\, decided Anthony Stewart should burn the vessel with tea aboard. Stewart rowed out to Windmill Point on October 19\, 1774 and set fire to the ship. \nCome to the Hammond-Harwood House to see this special punch bowl and sample “Mrs. Handy’s Tea Punch” (non-alcoholic) from the original Maryland’s Way cookbook.
