SUMMARY:Period Fashion Show\, Part II - What's Underneath? Dressing the Civil War Woman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture and presentation of authentic Civil War-era women’s garments. Costume collector Heather Hook will show clothing items typically found in a woman’s wardrobe of the period and how they were worn. Dressing ladies from the skin out involved multiple layers of clothing\, so her collection includes undergarments and gowns worn for early day\, teatime\, evening\, balls\, weddings\, and while in mourning. \nHeather’s inspirations for collecting began in 1990 with her participation in historic reenacting. In order to be as authentic as possible\, Heather purchased an original Civil War gown and began her research on materials and construction. Ever since\, she has been adding to her collection\, which now consists of over 3\,000 articles.

SUMMARY:Tick-Tock Clock Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Hammond-Harwood House’s collection of nine elaborate clocks from the 17th\, 18th\, and early 19th centuries. The tour begins with an in-depth history of timekeeping from sundials to Chinese water clocks. The invention of the pendulum in the 17th century modernized horological devices and a rising artisan class created clocks for elite and middle-class markets as consumer demand expanded. The tour will examine each item\, admiring the individual creation of the piece\, its decorative design\, and the social history connected to it. You will come away from this experience with a better appreciation for what time meant to our ancestors as well as how we tell time today.

SUMMARY:Holiday Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join in the holiday festivities with an open house at the Hammond-Harwood House. Since 1953\, the area’s garden clubs have created festive floral designs appropriate to the room’s architecture and collection. Early Americans did not celebrate Christmas Day as we do today\, as it was associated to the pagan holiday of winter solstice\, but the twelve days following Christmas Day included many celebrations and festivities. This year’s floral theme is dedicated to the traditional song\, The Twelve Days of Christmas. \nThis event is Free. Please RSVP at info@hammondharwoodhouse.org \nMore information coming soon.
