The Hammond-Harwood House garden will be a priority project in 2025. To inspire the support of our members, we are proud to offer an outstanding tour of great English gardens. Our itinerary includes fine examples of English garden designs from the 17th century Queen’s Garden at Kew to the “New Perennial” style of Piet Oudolf at Bury Court and Wisley. Other great names include Vita Sackville-West, Harold Nicholson, Christopher Lloyd, William Robinson, Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Julian and Isabel Bannerman, Charles Bridgeman, Capability Brown, William Kent, Lanning Roper, and Penelope Hobhouse.
The tour departs June 15, 2025 returning June 23. The minimum group size is 14 to a maximum of 20. At least one member of each party sharing accommodation must be a member of Hammond-Harwood House. Our tour operator is again Adventures Abroad Worldwide Travel.
Depart the US for arrival at Heathrow airport on June 16, where the group will meet at 11:00 a.m. for group transport to Kew Gardens for a visit, and then on to the first Hotel in Tunbridge Wells
The group meets at Heathrow airport at 11:00 a.m. This includes those opting for the group flight offered by Adventures Abroad and those arriving on time independently. Those arriving later will miss the visit to Kew Gardens and meet the group at The Spa Hotel in Kent.
The Royal Botanic Garden at Kew is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kew’s delightful and varied grounds cover 300 acres and offer something of interest for everyone. A Grass Garden grows over 600 grasses. There are 2,000 species in the Herbaceous Garden alone.
It’s a great place to start our tour, to see elements of English garden history from the 17th century to the present day. The Queen’s Garden is in the style of a 17th century garden behind the intimate Kew Palace. All the plant species there were extant in the 17th century. The 18th century English landscape garden concept was adopted in Europe and Kew’s influence in horticulture, plant classification and economic botany spread internationally from the time of Joseph Banks’ directorship in the 1770s. As the focus of a growing level of botanic activity, the mid-19th century garden, which overlays earlier royal landscape gardens is centered on two large iron framed glasshouses – the Palm House and the Temperate House that became models for conservatories around the world. Elements of the 18th and 19th century include the Orangery, Queen Charlotte’s Cottage, the folly temples, Rhododendron Dell, boundary ha-ha, William Chambers’ pagoda, iron framed glasshouses, ornamental lakes and ponds. Herbarium and plant collections convey the history of the Gardens’ development from royal retreat and pleasure garden to national botanical and horticultural garden before becoming a modern institution of conservation ecology in the 20th century.
After the Kew visit, we will travel to Tunbridge Wells and check into The Spa Hotel, our base for three nights. Originally built in 1766 as a country mansion, it opened as a hotel in 1880. Set in 14 acres of picturesque grounds, it features an indoor swimming pool and gym, steam room and sauna. Our Welcome Dinner with wine in the award-winning restaurant is included.
The Spa Hotel, Tunbridge Wells, Meals: Dinner
Our only stop today is Gravetye Manor, nestled in the Sussex countryside, where beautiful grounds envelop the house and freshly grown produce is used in the award-winning restaurant. The Manor is now a luxury hotel. Its garden of 35 acres was originally created by visionary gardener William Robinson in 1885 and is now considered one of the most important historic gardens in England.
Lunch today will be at the Michelin-starred restaurant located at Gravetye Manor where its menu is guided by seasonality in the Gravetye kitchen garden.

This morning takes us towards the High Weald of Kent and Great Dixter, the life’s work of the late Christopher Lloyd whose exemplary gardens surround the 15th-century Manor House. The garden continues to be ground-breaking in its concepts and management, aiming for a 12-month display and an example of cottage gardening on a grand scale.
After breakfast our first visit is to Sissinghurst Castle, the iconic Arts and Crafts garden designed by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson, their life-long project that began in the 1930’s. Enjoy the view from Vita’s writing room in the Tower for a sense of their great design of garden rooms, and long axial walks often with terminal points such as a statue, archway or pair of sentinel poplars. Stroll through the more intimate small geometrical gardens opening off these axial walks. Lunch is independent at The Granary restaurant on site, featuring fresh ingredients harvested from the Vegetable Garden.
After lunch we take a short drive to Pashley Manor, a family-owned 11-acre English country garden on the border of Sussex and Kent. Sweeping herbaceous borders, box hedges, an historic walled garden, an inspiring kitchen garden and large ponds are a haven for birds, moor hens, ducks and a black swan. The rose garden features over a hundred varieties that swathe the walls, climb obelisks and bloom in flower beds.

The garden continues to be ground-breaking in its concepts and management, aiming for a 12-month display and an example of cottage gardening on a grand scale.
The garden is composed of a series of small gardens including a fine topiary garden, rose garden, kitchen garden – an attractive mingling of vegetables and flowers – a large orchard with many pockets of wildflowers and a magnificent herbaceous border in summer.
Owned by the Great Dixter Charitable Trust, the gardens are now enthusiastically taken onward by the head gardener Fergus Garrett.
Continue to Alfriston Clergy House for a guided tour. Alfriston Clergy House is a Grade II listed building which was built as residence for the parish priest of the neighboring 14th-century St. Andrew’s Church. The house is over 600 years old and one of a handful remaining Wealden Houses in Alfriston village. Through a series of changes and renovations across the centuries it has become the picturesque house seen today, an idyllic setting with views across the River Cuckmere. The house is framed on three sides by garden. At one side there is an orchard filled with medlar and quince; in the middle there are reed beds overlooking the River Cuckmere; and at the far end there are terraces, planted and decorated in Arts & Crafts style by the tenant who lived there in the 1920s – Sir Robert Witt – who brought the huge terracotta jars, which are such a notable feature here, back from his overseas travels.
Finally, we stop at Monk’s House for a tour of the beautiful gardens. Monk’s House is home to a beautiful English country garden designed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf where they lived from 1919 until Leonard’s death in 1969. Surrounded by views of the Sussex Downs, the borders are packed full of herbaceous perennials, and climbers adorn flint walls. This compact garden is as charming as the house itself, which is still full of Virginia and Leonard’s favorite things, just as if they had just stepped out for a walk.
After this visit we transfer to the Harbour Hotel in the heart of Guildford. This contemporary hotel also features a full-service spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and a sauna. We will be here for three nights.

This morning our first stop is Woolbeding in West Sussex where formal gardens merge into the far-reaching rural landscape of the River Rother, a perfect backdrop for many sculptures and follies. A masterpiece of color and design, you can spend hours exploring this carefully cultivated and constantly evolving 20th century garden. Be sure to see the recently opened Woolbeding Glasshouse and Silk Route Garden. There is a café for light refreshments, but save room for the Cream Tea this afternoon at West Dean
We continue to West Dean. Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean Gardens in West Sussex is one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of historic features on a gentle walk around the grounds. It includes an Edwardian Pagoda, a walled kitchen garden, spring gardens, sunken gardens, an arboretum, orchard and Victorian glasshouses. After the tour, you will be treated to a cream tea.

This morning, we will head directly to Claremont for a guided tour and visit. This grade I listed garden created by the great landscape designers of the 18th century charts the evolution of the English Landscape Garden. Steeped in nearly 300 years of history, this 18th-century garden is a green oasis in the heart of Surrey within easy reach of London. Originally a countryside retreat of queens and heirs, so that they could escape court life and enjoy simple outdoor pleasures.
Many of the great names in landscape design history played a part in the creation of the estate. Over the years Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and ‘Capability’ Brown all put their own distinctive stamp on the pleasure grounds. Today you can still spot historical features in the garden, including the large turf amphitheater, serpentine lake, grotto, Camellia Terrace and Belvedere Tower.
Next, we continue to Polesden Lacey, a 1,600-acre estate with elegant gardens and Edwardian house, for a tour of the gardens and lunch. The garden at Polesden Lacey has something to offer in every season. Take in the views over Ranmore Common from the South Lawn. Indulge in the peace and quiet of the Old Kitchen Garden and Upper Sunken Garden or soak up the color and scent around the Rose Garden and double herbaceous borders. Lunch is included today.

After checking out of the hotel, we head to the Wisley Gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society. In 1878 George Ferguson Wilson, businessman, scientist, inventor and keen gardener, purchased the site and established ‘The Oakwood Experimental Garden’ with the idea of growing difficult plants successfully. Soon the garden was renowned for its collection of lilies, gentians, Japanese irises, primulas and water plants. Despite changes since then, it is still true to his original concept.
Wisley is a very beautiful garden with romantic half-timbered Tudor-style buildings. The soil is mainly acid sand which is poor in nutrients and fast draining, challenging every planting scheme. There is a canal designed by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, a rock garden, formal and walled gardens by Lanning Roper, a country garden by Penelope Hobhouse and long borders by Piet Oudolf..
After lunch (independent) we head to the gardens at Hampton Court Palace. These gardens were once the exclusive playground of kings and queens. New ideas and designs arrived with each new era of royal gardeners, from the Tudors to the Victorians. This is the place to glimpse 500 years of garden history.
In the early 1500’s Cardinal Wolsey laid out the first small knot gardens. Henry VIII strutted through a Privy Garden. Charles II is responsible for the elegant Long Water and a simple Italianate style garden to display his classical statues. William III and Mary II created the Great Fountain Garden to complement their elegant Baroque palace.
At the end of the Pond Garden is a glass house containing the Great Vine, thought to be the oldest and largest grape vine in the world. This is a Black Hamburg eating variety, planted in 1768 by Lancelot Capability Brown.
The Royal Kitchen Garden recreates William III’s walled garden. The Rose Garden is a 20th century creation reintroducing many old varieties with heady scent.
After our visit we transfer to our boutique hotel on the banks of the Thames. The Mitre is the perfect place to finish with style. The hotel describes itself as “where quirky meets British sensibility, meets elegant authentic luxury.” It was built in 1665 as an inn to accommodate visitors to Hampton Court Palace. A celebratory Farewell Dinner with wine is included.
Hotel: The Mitre
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, transfer to Heathrow for your departing flight. There will be a group transfer set at a specific time to coincide with the group flight offered when the tour is guaranteed. If you are travelling independently at a time that does not work with this transfer, Adventures Abroad can arrange a transfer at an additional cost.

Here are some of the most asked questions. We hope you find the information you are looking for. If not, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
You will have a more personal experience exploring beautiful gardens, meeting head gardeners, volunteers, and garden owners with a real passion for the gardens they tend.
At least one member of a pair travelling together and sharing accommodations must be a member of the Hammond-Harwood House Association. We hope that this trip will attract new members as well as reward our current members for their support. We intend to offer at least one trip a year in the future and may require membership for every traveler.
Vaccination is recommended but not required. It is a requirement to review the travel advisories for England posted by the Center for Disease Control and additional pertinent information from the World Health Organization. If government guidelines change, this policy will be updated.
Yes. It is a condition of booking that you and all members of your party take out comprehensive travel insurance to participate on our tour. Please make sure your travel insurance is adequate for your needs. Your policy must include coverage for medical expenses, personal injury, and personal liability. We strongly recommend you also obtain coverage for loss of baggage, money, and valuables; delay or curtailment; missed departure; cancellation expenses and legal expenses. You may be asked to provide your travel insurer name, contact number and policy number prior to the tour. Some credit card companies provide trip insurance as a benefit, (for example, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express Platinum, and Delta Sky Miles Reserve American Express). If you book your trip with one of these cards, that insurance benefit may meet this travel requirement.
The evolving travel landscape post-COVID has resulted in significant shifts in demand for flights, accommodations, and transportation. Suppliers are now requiring full deposits well in advance to guarantee reservations. The final payment deadline allows us to secure all the details needed to operate a successful trip.
Our aim is for every participant to fully enjoy the sites we visit, with a good level of mobility, physical and mental fitness, and stamina. Visits are mainly outdoors with some indoor visits, and they will take place in all weather conditions. In addition, many gardens include uneven ground, steps, and rough paths. You will be negotiating the steps on and off the coach. Many of the sites are self-guided and you can take them at your own pace. Should you wish to take a day off from the tour, you are perfectly entitled to do so if you are returning to our hotel in the evening.
We do not “match up” single travelers, but if you wish to share a room, we will notify Adventures Abroad to put you in touch with other single travelers interested in sharing accommodations. All hotels charge per room, which are often doubles, so that increases the price for a single traveler.
Smoking is not permitted on any transport, during sightseeing excursions, and all group meals.
For the first three nights we will be staying at The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. The next three nights are in Guildford, at The Harbour Hotel. Our final night is at The Mitre Hampton Court. All are four-star hotels, chosen for their excellent levels of comfort, service and location to minimize travel time to the tour sites. In the unlikely event that a hotel becomes unavailable before the 90-day deadline, a property of equal standard may be substituted.
The legal luggage allowance will be determined by the airline for your travel. Porterage is available at our hotels. We recommend limiting your luggage to one standard sized suitcase and one carry-on. The weight of the largest piece should not exceed 18kg/40lb per person.
Day wear is informal, and we recommend layers for variable temperatures, a waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear. For lunch at Gravetye Manor, you may enjoy dressing up a notch. In the evening, we suggest “smart casual”. Gentlemen are not required to wear jackets or tie.
All breakfasts are included. Two dinners, two lunches and a cream tea are also included. For the rest, we recommend approaching lunch and dinner as a local. Dining as a local means eating solo, in pairs, or very small groups rather than in our larger group.
Adventures Abroad have an extensive list of references and are happy to provide contact information for local travelers who participated in travel trips with Adventures Abroad. Additionally, their well-travelled staff can provide you with first-hand experience of their own tours with Adventures Abroad.
The cost of the trip is $5800 per person, based on double occupancy. A single supplement is $1500. A deposit of $700 is required at the time of booking. This deposit is nonrefundable. It may be recoverable under the terms of your trip insurance if you cancel for certain reasons. If the minimum number of 14 paying passengers is not booked by 90 days prior to departure, the trip will be cancelled, and your deposit will be refunded. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure.
