Within the walls of this home, families raised their children, enslaved people worked to perform the tasks necessary for their owners’ graceful living, nearly impoverished sisters held onto the property by renting out rooms to Naval Academy professors. Babies were born, mothers chatted over tea, fathers gambled away fortunes. The stories of those who lived in the HammondHarwood House are a social history that informs our lives today in the 21st century. School children visiting; tourists learning about architecture, colonial portraits, and stunning Federal furniture; local residents enjoying programs focusing on African American history, architecture, period music, or gardens – all benefit from the many and varied offerings throughout the year.

The Hammond-Harwood House is an architectural gem. Thousands from across the country and around the world visit every year. As an example of adapting European grand design to the American colonies in 1774, the house is unique. “The most beautiful door in America” graces its entrance. On the National Register of Historic Places, the house is an outstanding example of preservation, with original brickwork, carved moldings, and interior features virtually unchanged since the early 19th century.

The museum holds one of the finest collections of American fine art, furniture, and decorative art. Much of the collection is original to the house or closely connected to the people who lived here. Portraits by Charles Willson Peale and other early artists give us a personal, intimate view of early American families. Special exhibitions every year highlight important stories behind the pieces in the collection.

The Hammond-Harwood House as an example of superb preservation contributes to the economic engine of tourism in Annapolis. Making the house museum and its stories well-known and the site accessible to all is important to our mission. Just last year a Spanish-language museum tour was created and put on on iPads. Additional outreach efforts include a three year partnership with Creating Communities for an after school arts education program.
