Celebrate Juneteenth at Hammond-Harwood House

In the historic open-hearth kitchen of Hammond-Harwood House, Joyce White, author of “Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine,” will discuss the Black cooks who developed and prepared the signature dishes of early Maryland. One such talented cook was Sybby Grant, enslaved by the Thomas family who lived at One West Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore. By 1850, Sybbe was managing the kitchen and preparing elaborate meals for family and guests. The basement of the home included built-in brick terrapin bins which held live specimens ready to be prepared for one of Maryland’s most famous dishes.

Joyce will be available to sign copies of her book.
