Daily Life for the Enslaved at Hammond-Harwood House

Join Julie Rose, director of Marietta House, and Joyce White, food historian, for a special tour that focuses on what daily life at Hammond-Harwood House was like for the enslaved women and children in the early 19th century.

Through the lens of foodways, the tour will take you through the house showing the roles of the enslaved women and children. Mary and Matilda Matthews, Juliet, and Harry – all enslaved by the Loockermans — were tasked with cooking, cleaning, childcare, gardening, and keeping the hearth fires burning.
