Daily Life for the Enslaved at Hammond-Harwood House

Join Julie Rose, director of Marietta House, and Joyce White, food historian, for a special tour that focuses on what daily life at Hammond-Harwood House was like for the enslaved women and children in the early 19^th century.

Through the lens of foodways, the tour will take you through the house showing the roles of the enslaved women and children. Mary and Matilda Matthews, Juliet, and Harry – all enslaved by the Loockermans — were tasked with cooking, cleaning, childcare, gardening, and keeping the hearth fires burning.
