NOTE: LECTURE IS FOR WITH QUILL AND VOICE CONCERT TICKET HOLDERS ONLY AND IS COMPLEMENTARY WITH YOUR TICKET
Join Professor Thomas Ward (U.S. Naval Academy) for a pre-concert talk exploring the rich musical and poetic world of seventeenth-century writer Katherine Philips. Drawing on his research into early modern poetry and song, Ward illuminates the intimate networks of friendship, authorship, and music-making that shaped Philips’s work—and the composers who set her texts to music. This talk offers vivid historical context for the evening’s program and invites listeners into the cultural world behind the sounds they are about to hear.
Talk will begin at 5:00 pm. The lecture will be followed by a pre-concert reception with light refreshments at 6:00 pm and our With Quill and Voice: A Valentine of Verse and Song from the Literary Salons of 17th-Century England concert at 7:00 pm.
